Why are bond enthalpies always positive?

Bond enthalpies are the energy needed to break a bond in a molecule, so energy needs to be put in to break the bonds. The reaction enthalpy can be negative because there are bonds being broken as well as formed, so there is energy being put in as well as energy being released.

Because it is the energy required to break a bond, so that value must be positive.

It’s positive because it’s the energy needed to break a bond.

It is the energy required to break bonds which is always positive.

Bond enthalpies are the energy required to break a bond, therefore you are always inputting energy, and that means the enthalpy will be positive.

Since bond enthalpy is the energy needed to break a bond, it is always positive since energy is required to break bonds.
