RxN states

How do you change the states of a RxN so that it is all the same to achieve standard reaction enthalpy?

Hi Kiara,

When a reaction is in its standard state, all its reactants and products are already in the standard states. However, in the case it isn't, Dr. Lavelle gave us some equation that give us the enthalpy when reactions are undergoing a phase change. You can just add the total enthalpy after your calculations since enthalpy is a state function.

You should use phase changes as intermediates and you can account this as part of the total enthalpy of the original equation. However there are usually standard enthalpies of formation for mutiples states of the same compound (e.g. H2O)

You also have to know what the standard state of the given substance is to know which phase change is necessary to reach it. I think we know what the standard state of a lot of molecules and compounds are like O2 is a gas or H20 is a liquid but I don't know how to figure that out necessarily for more complicated/less intuitive molecules.
