Achieve Homework Weeks 4/5 #4

Postby Sophia Schiro » Thu Jan 27, 2022 1:21 pm

Hi,
Does anyone know how to do this problem:
Based on relative bond strengths, classify these reactions as endothermic (energy absorbed) or exothermic (energy released).

This one is a bit tricky, but it's key to remember that bond breaking requires heat (endothermic) and bond making releases heat (exothermic). This doesn't mean that all bond making and breaking will follow those rules though. For example, if a bond is weak, then it will cost more heat to put them together than leaving them apart. Hope that helps!

If a reaction is exothermic, the energy of bonds broken are less than the energy of bonds formed; in an endothermic reaction, the energy of bonds broken is greater than the energy of bonds formed. It would be helpful to compare the strength bonds of reactants and bonds of products with an inequality, this should help determine whether the reaction will be exothermic or endothermic.
