Problem 4B.3

Postby Jordan Kaplan 2E » Thu Jan 27, 2022 9:25 pm

The internal energy of a system increased by 982 J when it was supplied with 492 J of energy as heat. (a) Was work done by or on the system? (b) How much work was done?

I understand how work was done on the system, but I don't get how the answer to b is 90 x 10^2J. I thought it would be simple subtraction of 982-492 = 490J of heat but I guess not?

Your reasoning is correct. I believe 4B.3 had a typo recognized by the professor in his "solutions manuals errors" document, and the correct answer for b) is actually 490 J.
