Standard Enthalpy of Formation

Postby Yajing Feng 2J » Fri Jan 28, 2022 11:06 am

Hello,

In the Friday (1/21) lecture, Dr. Lavelle highlights method 3 of finding the standard reaction enthalpy with the standard enthalpy of formation of the products and reactants. I was wondering if the numbers for the standard enthalpies of formation will be given or will we have to calculate those individually?

Hello! I believe we'll be given these values; in that example, I believe Dr. Lavelle said he got the values from a table.
(Although we may have to do some calculations? In class we were given the standard reaction enthalpy of 2 moles of a substance, so we just divided that value by 2 to get the standard enthalpy of formation. I wouldn't be surprised if we had to do simple calculations like that)

Yes, I believe Dr. Lavelle said that we will be given those values in that lecture.

Hello! We should be given values for the standard enthalpies of formation (a lot of the examples and problems we have been doing require a table of such values). But, like one of the comments said above, we may have to perform simple calculations to ensure that we are using standard enthalpies of formation for 1 mol of products or reactants.

Yes, we will be given these values. As these values are already known, there is no need for us to memorize them.

Those values would be provided for us.
