Using Hess' Law

Postby Cory Poon 3G » Sat Jan 29, 2022 1:11 am

In the Achieve Week 4, #5, it askes to find delta H. When we flip the equations, why do the numbers change signs?

When you flip the equation, the numbers change signs because the forward reaction will either be endothermic (+deltaH) or exothermic (-deltaH). The reverse reaction (or the equation when it gets flipped) will be the opposite of the forward reaction, so the sign must change to show that the equation is now exothermic or endothermic. Hope this helps!
