Standard State

How can you tell when an element is in its most stable state? And is that considered its standard state?

There isn't really a universal rule for determining when something is in it's standard state, the only real way know them is to know just general trends. Examples include how most of the halogens are diatomic in their standard state like F2 or Cl2. However you also have to check they are in the right physical state as well because while the standard state for Fluorine may be F2 (gas) for Bromine it is Br2 (liquid). For other elements outside of of the halogens it gets tricky like how Carbon's standard state is C (solid) and oxygen is O2 (gas). A general rule of thumb would be to just check the element's physical state and compare it with the element's physical state on the periodic table.
