Non-state properties

Postby Sydney Silverman 2C » Sun Feb 05, 2023 5:06 pm

Hi! Does anyone have good examples of properties that aren't state properties / their place in a system?

Hi! A state property is only dependent on the initial and final measures and is not influenced by the path taken. Therefore, work and heat are not state properties because they essentially describe the path taken from start to finish.

Heat and work are good examples of path functions (non state functions)
An equation that relates heat and work is that of the first law of thermodynamics: ΔU (change in internal energy of the system) = q (heat added to system) - w (work done by system)
