Delta H

Postby SohelaBedi1E » Sun Feb 05, 2023 11:44 pm

What are the purposes of each version of delta H? For example, what is the difference between enthalpy of formation and enthalpy of the reaction?

Standard enthalpy of formation is just the standard reaction enthalpy of one mole of a substance when the elements are in their most stable states. Standard enthalpy of formation can be used to calculate the standard enthalpy of reaction. I'm not sure if that helps but the way I think of it is that enthalpy of the reaction will be the overall enthalpy (products - reactants) whereas each element/substance of a reaction will have its own standard enthalpy of formation.
