How do we know which bonds to break when calculating bond enthalpies for reactions?

Do we have to know the structure of all the compounds and know if molecules form single, double, or triple bond, or would those diagrams be given?

In order to find out which bonds break when calculating bond enthalpies for reactions, I believe that we will have to draw out the structures of compounds.

I found it easy to draw out the structures and also to write out how many of each type of bond we had. That way I could just cross out what was the same on both sides and just focus on which bonds we’re diferente in the reactant and product sides.
