Bomb Calorimeter

Postby Stella Nguyen 1J » Thu Feb 18, 2021 8:41 am

Hi everyone!

Is a bomb calorimeter considered a perfect system?

Thank you!

Thats a good question! I would assume so because a bomb calorimeter is an isolated system therefore matter and energy cannot enter or leave.

A bomb calorimeter is a closed system because it allows heat to be exchanged. Therefore, it is a perfect system since no heat is being lost.

Yes, a bomb calorimeter is an isolated system and matter/energy can't leave the system therefore it would be considered a "perfect system"

Hi! Since a bomb calorimeter is an isolated system (no energy or matter is being lost/gained), it is a perfect system. Hope this helps!

It would be safe to assume that a bomb calorimeter is a near perfect system because of its incredibly insulated and protective mechanisms.

A bomb calorimeter is considered an isolated system. This is because matter nor energy is being exchanged with the surroundings outside of the bomb calorimeter.

I think it would be an isolated system.

I was confused about this too! Through doing research, I believe you are correct as a bomb calorimeter is an isolated system and thus matter and energy cannot leave the system. I believe this ensures that it is in fact a perfect system.

I've heard about an open, closed, and isolated system but what exactly is a perfect system?
What characterizes such a system and are there any examples besides a bomb calorimeter?

I would like to know as well, though I'm pretty sure that it's just another name for an isolated system. I checked through the textbook, and there was no mention of a perfect system anywhere within. Nor does Google provide any answers. Was it described as a perfect system somewhere in the lectures?

A bomb calorimeter is an isolated system that cannot exchange matter or thermal energy with its surroundings!
Hope this helps!

A bomb calorimeter is the best simulation of a perfect system.
Hope this helps!

I think that a bomb calorimeter represents the closest thing to a perfect system.

Hi! Like many have stated before, a bomb calorimeter is considered a "perfect system" since it is an isolated system which means no energy/matter can leave the system or be brought in.
