Question 8.33

Postby 904608194 » Thu Jan 28, 2016 7:31 pm

The question states to predict the contribution of heat capacity made by molecular motions for each of the following atoms and molecules:
(a) HCN
(b) C2H6
(c) Ar
(d) HBr

How do we predict this? What is the difference between them?

HCN is linear so the contribution from molecular motions will be (5/2)R

C2H6 is a polyatomic molecule. so the contribution from molecular motions will be (3)R

Ar is monatomic so the contribution from molecular motions will be (3/2)R

HBr is diatomic so the contribution from molecular motions will be (5/2)R
