System Doing Work on Surroundings

Postby Sophia_Galstyan_3I » Mon Feb 19, 2024 12:30 pm

Hi everyone, I wanted a clarification.

When you increase the volume of a system, does this mean your system is doing work on its surroundings causing the work to be negative?

Yes. w = -PdeltaV and if delta V is a positive, then work is overall negative. This means work is done by the system on its surroundings.
