Heat Capacity in Substances

Postby 305987474 » Wed Feb 28, 2024 7:06 pm

How does heat capacity relate to the absorbance and release of heat energy in a substance? And how does heat capacity change with changes in temperature and molecular structures?

Heat capacity determines how much heat energy a substance can absorb or release, with higher heat capacities indicating greater ability to absorb or retain heat. It generally increases with temperature due to increased molecular motion and is influenced by molecular structure, with more complex structures often associated with higher heat capacities.

Heat capacity relates to the absorption of heat because it tells you how much energy is required to raised a material by a degree celsius. This heat capacity can change with temperature because at certain temperatures a material will be in a different phase in which there are different energy requirements to raise the same material to a degree higher.
