Heat Capacity

What does it mean when they say heat capacity is an extensive property? And what is an intensive property?

Heat capacity is an extensive property because it depends on the amount of the substance being used such as if 5ml is being used or 10ml. So an intensive property doesn't depend on the amount of substance being used so it doesn't matter if 5ml are being used or 10ml.

A good way to remember it is that an extensive property is reliant on external conditions (aka the amount of substance) and an intensive property has more to do with individual units so external forces don't matter as much.

This is briefly explained in the book (reference page-269).

Heat capacity, heat divided by change in temperature, itself is an extensive property, meaning that the larger the sample, the more heat is required to to raise its temperature by a given amount. It is, in a way, "uncertain" as the result depends greatly on the QUANTITY. This is why we would need specific heat capacity, which can be considered an intensive property. Specific heat capacity, which is simply just heat capacity divided by mass of sample, is more convenient to use. The value does not change, depending on the phase of substance.
