Work of Expansion

Postby swatiperepa » Sun Jan 15, 2017 5:36 pm

Can someone please explain work of expansion? I remember Professor Lavelle mentioning something about constant pressure and volume change, but I don't really understand.

At a molar heat capacity of a gas at constant pressure, volume changes in order to maintain a certain pressure, and by doing so the the system does work when it expands or contracts with each adjustment. At a molar heat capacity of a gas at a constant volume, pressure changes, however, no work is done because at a fixed volume, the system does not expand or contract. Hope this helps!
