When you are doing a problem using a calorimeter, does deltaV always equal 0?

Only for a constant V (bomb) calorimeter.

Do we need to know how to do questions related to calibrating the calorimeter? If so, how do we do those? Do you just make the value of q negative?

Hi swatiperepa!

I know that there are questions that specifically ask you to calculate the heat capacity of the calorimeter. In questions like this, the mass and temperature of the added water and calorimeter, in addition to the final temperature reached, is given. Thus, you would find seperately the energy lost by the hot water and energy gained by the cold water using the equation q=m*C*deltaT. Subtract both q to find what the calorimeter got, and then find the heat capacity of the calorimeter by dividing the difference in q by final temperature.
