Heat Capacity vs. Specific Heat Capacity
I was just wondering if someone could clarify for me the difference between heat capacity and specific heat capacity. Thanks so much!

Re: Heat Capacity vs. Specific Heat Capacity
Molar heat capacity is a measure of the amount of heat necessary to raise the temperature of one mole of a pure substance by one degree K. Specific heat capacity is a measure of the amount of heat necessary to raise the temperature of one gram of a pure substance by one degree K.

Re: Heat Capacity vs. Specific Heat Capacity
It's basically just about the units. It depends whether you are using grams or moles.

Re: Heat Capacity vs. Specific Heat Capacity
Heat capacity is the amount of heat over how much the temperature increased; it's a ratio. Whereas specific heat capacity is the heat capacity divided by the mass of the sample. Molar heat capacity is similar to specific heat capacity but instead of dividing the heat capacity by the mass, you're dividing by moles of the sample.

Re: Heat Capacity vs. Specific Heat Capacity
Heat capacity tells you how much heat is necessary for a temperature change. Molar heat capacity is in J/K-mol and specific heat capacity is in J/C-g. Depending on what units (mol or g) are given in a problem, use the molar heat or specific heat for the "c" value in

Re: Heat Capacity vs. Specific Heat Capacity
Heat capacity refers to the amount of heat that is required to change the temperature of an object by a certain degree. Specific heat capacity, however, refers amount of heat that is required to raise the temperature of an object per unit mass. In other words, you can obtain that by dividing the heat capacity by the mass of the sample.

Re: Heat Capacity vs. Specific Heat Capacity
Heat Capacity is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of an object by 1 deg C and is extensive. However, specific heat capacity is intensive and is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a substance by 1 deg C. Specific heat is preferred over heat capacity.
