What type of system is a Bomb Calorimeter?
Is a bomb calorimeter a closed system, because the inner chamber can transfer energy in the form of heat but cannot transfer matter to the water it is surrounded by ? Or is it an insulated system because the bomb calorimeter itself is insulated from the outside environment?

Re: What type of system is a Bomb Calorimeter?
A bomb calorimeter is a closed system because it allows heat to be exchanged. While this system is insulated, an "insulated system" is not one of the main three types of systems: closed, open, and isolated. An isolated system would not allow for any transfer of matter or energy. In contrast, an open system allows for the transfer of matter and energy. A closed system only allows energy (heat) to be transferred.

Also, a Bomb Calorimeter is used during dconstant Volume calorimetry because the reaction chamber is a fixed volume.

A bomb calorimeter is the one with constant V, while the simple calorimeter is just the one with constant P and not sealed.

To figure out if something is a closed system, you should first try to figure out what the system is. In a bomb calorimeter, the system is what is inside, the inner chamber. Because this system can't exchange heat or energy with its surroundings, it's a closed system.
