Extensive vs Intensive Properties

Heat capacity is listed as an extensive property while specific heat capacity and molar heat capacity are listed as intensive properties. What is the difference between the two properties?

The differences between the two properties is that extensive properties are dependent on mass while intensive properties are not. An example for each respectively would be mass for extensive and density for intensive

An extensive property depends on the amount of a substance there is, while an intensive property is the same no matter how much of a specific substance there is. Heat capacity depends on the amount of a substance because it takes more heat to raise the temperature of a larger sample so it is an extensive property. However, specific heat is defined for one gram of a substance so is the same value for any amount of that substance and is an intensive property.

And extensive property is a property that changes based on how much there is of the sample- it is based on weight, for example, mass, volume, etc.

An intensive property is a property that is an intrinsic quality of the sample- it does not change based on the weight, for example, density, hardness, etc.


The heat capacity is extensive because the heat required to raise the temperature by 1 C. will change depending on how much material we are given.

The specific heat capacity is the heat capacity divided by the mass of the sample. Therefore, there is a specific heat capacity for a specific material for a specific mass. Therefore, specific heat capacity is intensive, as the value will always be the same for the material of a given weight- we took the weight into account in creating the value.
