8.1 systems

Postby cbercik » Wed Jan 17, 2018 3:56 pm

For part D, i'm confused what type of system would describe gas burning in a car engine.
Does the transfer of fuel classify it as open?

Yup it's considered an open system because as gasoline is burned, it releases gaseous byproducts as well as heat. This indicates a transfer of both substance and heat energy, as open systems ten to do.

I just think of the exhaust pipes and the exhaust fumes that come out of the car; instantly then it becomes obvious that the car engine is an open system.

Both heat and mass are released from the system, therefore the system is open
