When can change in internal energy be equaled to heat transferred? When can it be equaled to work?

When there is no word done to the system, the change of internal energy is the same as the heat change. When there is no heat exchange, the change of internal energy is equal to the work done.

Change in internal energy can be equaled to heat transfer when there is no work done (volume of reactants = volume of products). Change of internal energy is equal to work done when there is no heat exchanged. This can be seen in the equation ΔU = q + w.

The fundamental equation necessary to understand this is that U = q + w (deltas implied)

When there is no work done on the system, U = q

When there is no heat transferred to or from the system, U = w

deltaU = q + w. When no work is done, U=q. When no heat is transferred, U=w.
