Postby Tinisha 1G » Mon Jan 28, 2019 12:41 pm

Why is the specific heat capacity of water so high?

Water contains hydrogen bonds which require a lot of heat in order to break so its temperature doesn't rise very easily because most of the energy goes into just trying to break these hydrogen bonds. Therefore, water has a high boiling point because it is hard to generate the heat necessary to overcome the hydrogen bonds.

Water has such a high specific heat capacity because of multiple hydrogen bonds between water molecules it takes a lot amount of heat energy to cause those molecules to move faster and raise the temperature of the water.
