Cv and Cp

Postby Fiona Jackson 1D » Tue Jan 29, 2019 7:57 am

In class we went over how Cp is usually greater than Cv, why is that? Also how does whether the heat capacity is Cv or Cp change calculations?

For an ideal gas, Cp is greater than Cv because the Cp system expands (since pressure is constant and volume is not) so the Cp system does work.

Cp for any given gas performs work due to its expansion. Cv is in a fixed container so it is not allowed to expand / do work. That is why the value of Cp is higher the Cv
