Cp/Cv formulas

On the formula sheet,Cp=(5/2)R. In the book, this is only true in regards to atoms, but for linear molecules its stated at Cp=(7/2)R. In the example 4C.1 for 7th addition they use (7/2). Cv is similar with Cv=(3/2)R and (5/2)R for linear molecules. When do you know which equation to use?

Cv = (3/2)R and Cp = (5/2)R would be true for any monoatomic ideal gas, so you would use these equations in those cases.
If a molecule is linear, it wouldn't be a monoatomic ideal gas, so you would use the other equations for constant pressure and constant volume.
