Compression of Gas

Postby Cynthia Ulloa » Sat Feb 02, 2019 5:57 pm

When we compress a gas, are we adding heat?

When a gas is compressed, work is done and the internal energy is changed. This means that heat is added. When the gas is decompressed, work/energy is lost and heat is lost.

why does work being done correlate to heat being added?

work will increase when heat increases because if you think about it... when you boil water you are providing heat in order to do work on the water to get it to boil

Consider work being done as a chemical reaction. It will either be endothermic and require energy or exothermic and release energy. In both of these instances, the change in energy will be correlated with a change in temperature as energy is transformed into thermal energy.
