Expansion Work and Nonexpansion Work

Postby Julia Go 2L » Sun Feb 03, 2019 1:33 pm

Hi,

Can someone explain the difference between expansion work and nonexpansion work? Also, how does this relate to reversibility?

Expansion work deals with gases, and is calculated using -P*delta V. Non expansion work is any other work. I'm not sure how it relates to reversibility, but I hope this helps.

Expansion work is work dealing with pressure-volume while non expansion work is pretty much everything else. I believe Gibbs helps you find the maximum amount of non expansion work that can potentially be done, but I am not sure how this relates to reversibility so hopefully someone else can answer that part.
