### Internal energy

What is internal energy and how do we find it?

### Re: Internal energy

Internal energy is a state property. It is found by adding q (heat) and w (work).

### Re: Internal energy

According to my notes:
Internal energy, U, is a state property. So, changes in U are a function of initial and final states (delta U = Ufinal - U initial). The energy of a closed system can be changed by heating/cooling or compression/expansion. Delta U = energy transferred by heating (+q) + energy transferred by compression (+w) = q + w

### Re: Internal energy

the internal energy of a system is the energy within the system, of the entire system, as well as the potential energy of the system as a whole due to external force fields

### Re: Internal energy

Internal energy is the energy within the system and is calculated by adding q and w together. It can't be calculated at a single point in time, but the change in internal energy can be calculated. At constant pressure, the change in internal energy is equal to the enthalpy minus pressure times change in volume, which can be derived by substituting the equations for q and w.
