Question 8.1 (Sixth Edition)

Postby Steve Magana 2I » Mon Feb 04, 2019 12:03 am

Question: Identify the following systems as open, closed, or isolated: (a) coffee in a very-high-quality thermos bottle; (b) coolant in a refrigerator coil; (c) a bomb calorimeter in which benzeneis burned; (d) gasoline burning in an automobile engine; (e) mercury in a thermometer; (f) a living plant.

Can someone explain parts b and c please? Thank you!

I believe b is a closed system because the actual coolant material cannot leave the system yet energy can and c is an isolated system because no energy or matter is able to leave a bomb calorimeter
