### 8.53 Bomb Calorimeter 6th Ed

In question 53, the solution manual mentions that because it is in a bomb calorimeter you know that the volume is fixed. Can someone explain to me why? I also had the question of why the q being calculated is negative?

The reaction of 1.40 g of carbon monoxide with excess water vapor to produce carbon dioxide and hydrogen gases in a bomb calorimeter causes the temperature of the calorimeter assembly to rise from 22.113 'C to 22.799 'C. The calorimeter assembly is known to have a total heat capacity of 3.00 kJ·('C)\$1. (a) Write a balanced equation for the reaction. (b) Calculate the internal energy change, delta U, for the reaction of 1.00 mol CO(g)

Bomb calorimeters are insulated and essential makes the system isolated which is a reason that volume is fixed because if it weren't then an external force like a piston could compress the volume, but in an isolated system, nothing exchanges with the surroundings.

using the equation q=-C(cal) x deltaT makes the q negative, but also the system is doing work on the surroundings therefore q is negative
