### Closed, Open, and Isolated Systems

What is the difference between a closed, an open, and an isolated system? And what are some examples?

A closed system has a fixed amount of matter but can exchange energy with its surroundings. An open system can exchange both matter and energy with its surroundings. An isolated system has no contact with its surroundings.

An open system is where matter and energy of a system can interact with the surroundings, so for example, an open beaker.

A closed system is where energy, but not matter, of a system can interact with the surroundings. In this case, this would be like a frozen bottle of water, where the matter stays inside the bottle but the energy can interact with the surroundings (and result in condensation).

An insulated system is one where both energy and matter cannot interact with the surroundings.

An example of an insulated system would be hot liquid inside of a thermos.

Matter and energy can be exchanged in an open system, like a reaction in an open beaker. Only energy, but not matter, can be exchanged with the surroundings in a closed system, like when there is a piston. No matter or energy is exchanged with the surroundings in an isolated system, like in a closed thermos.

The application of what people said before comes from the equation, delta U = q + w. If for example, something is isolated, that means that there can be no change in energy or matter, so delta U is zero.
