Reasons for Heat Capacity

Postby chloewinnett1L » Tue Feb 12, 2019 1:03 am

What are some molecular or even atomic factors that influence a compound's heat capacity? For example, why does copper have a higher heat capacity than water, and why does CO2 have a higher heat capacity than CO?

materials with more atoms per unit volume will generally have higher heat capacities on a per-mass basis and larger molecules will have a larger heat capacity on a per-mole basis

the transferred heat depends on three factors: (1) The change in temperature, (2) the mass of the system, and (3) the substance and phase of the substance.
