A calorimeter is just the tool used to measure specific heat. I doubt we'll really need to know the parts and how it works, but the important part to remember is which variable is constant: pressure or volume. I think this is because the equation or the units we have to use change depending on which is constant. I'm not very sure myself, so if someone else could explain more, that would be appreciated.
Additionally, there are differences in the types of calorimeters that are used. There are constant pressure calorimeters and constant volume calorimeters (also known as a bomb calorimeter). Constant pressure calorimetry does not have fixed volume while a bomb calorimeter does.
