Extensive/Intensive Property

Postby Sofia Ban » Sat Feb 01, 2020 3:10 pm

Why is heat capacity an extensive property and specific heat capacity an intensive property? What does this mean?

Heat capacity is an extensive property because a large quantity of matter will have a proportionally large heat capacity. Specific heat capacity is an intensive property because it doesn't matter how much substance you start with, the specific heat capacity is always the amount of energy required to raise 1 gram or 1 mole of a substance 1 degree C.

An intensive property is not dependent on the amount of a substance, like color and temperature. The extensive property, on the other hand, is dependent on the amount of a substance, like weight.

what is the difference between extensive and intensive properties? just that they are affected by volumes?

Extensive properties change based on the amount present. Intensive properties do not.
