Calorimeter vs. Bomb Calorimeter

Postby Emily Lo 1J » Sun Feb 02, 2020 4:13 pm

What is the difference between a calorimeter and a bomb calorimeter? Are there different uses for both of them?

A bomb calorimeter is completely sealed and insulated, making it an isolated system. It maintains constant volume, so it must withstand very high pressures or else it will blow up like a bomb).

a calorimeter is "a device in which energy transferred as heat is monitored by recording the change in temperature produced by a process taking place within it"
a bomb calorimeter is a more sophisticated version of the calorimeter. it is a sturdy sealed metal vessel of constant volume (the “bomb”), which is immersed in water, and the rise in temperature of the entire assembly is monitored

a regular calorimeter is thermally insulated, while the bomb calorimeter is an insulated container completely immersed in a metal box of water.
in addition, a constant pressure calorimeter is used to calculate change in enthalpy, while a bomb calorimeter (constant volume) is used to calculate the change in internal energy.

A calorimeter has constant pressure while a bomb calorimeter has constant volume.
