An ideal gas in a cylinder was placed in a heater and gained 5.50 kJ of energy as heat. If the cylinder increased in volume from 345 mL to 1846 mL against an atmospheric pressure of 750. Torr during this process, what is the change in internal energy of the gas in the cylinder?

How do we solve this?

First, U=q+w. So you know that q= 5.50KJ. Then you know that there is a constant pressure so .

In this case would it be necessary to convert the pressure from Torr to atm before plugging it into the equation?

Yes, you would want to convert the pressure from Torr first so that the units can match and cancel when you use the internal energy change equation.
