Reversible expansion always does more work than irreversible expansion. Additionally, the internal and external pressures are equal in reversible expansion.

Would the problems always specify whether it's reversible or irreversible? If not, how can we assume?

To add onto previous posts, in reversible expansion, the equilibrium isn't affected at any stage and the process is slower. While in a irreversible expansion, equilibrium may exist only after completing the process and the process is much quicker.
