Heat released/ gained

When bonds are being broken/ formed in relation to melting points and freezing points, is energy released when a bond is broken? Or is energy gained? Similarly, is energy released/gained when a bond is formed?

When a bond is broken, energy is required because it takes energy to break bonds. Similarly, energy is released when bonds are formed.

In relation to melting / freezing points, energy will be required to break bonds (think heating up an ice cube to make it into water). The energy released when bonds are formed is less obvious, but the climate on a humid day is probably a clue.

In order for a bond to break there must have a source of energy to break that bond, and so with the formation of bonds because is typically an exothermic reaction, heat is released

It takes energy to break bonds and energy is released to form bonds
