m versus n

Postby Catherine Bubser 2C » Fri Feb 12, 2021 7:14 am

Does the m constant mean mass and the n constant mean moles in heat capacity equations?

Yes that is correct. You'll notice how when there's m, the heat capacity constant is written as Cs, which actually means specific heat capacity. As for n, the heat capacity is written as Cm, which actually means molar heat capacity.

Yes, you're right! For example, Cp,m means specific heat capacity under constant pressure and Cv,m means specific heat capacity under constant volume.

Yep!. Make sure to check which units you use in these thermodynamic equations because they might tell you whether to use m or n. I hope this helps!

Yes, you are correct, m is mass and n is moles.

Yes, m is mass and n is moles. If you're given m, you should use the specific heat capacity and if given n you should use molar heat capacity. You could also convert the mass to moles and moles to mass to use either of the heat capacities.

yes n is used to specify that you are using molar heat capacity.

Yeah! m stands for mass while n stands for moles

Yup, 'm' is used to indicate mass usually in the form of grams and 'n' is used to indicate moles.

Yes, they always use n for moles so as not to confuse it with m which is for mass.

m is mass and n is mols.
