When a copper rod is heated from 25 °C to 75 °C, roughly 487.5 J of heat is consumed. If the rod weights 25 g, what is the specific heat capacity of copper? What is the molar heat capacity? Take the molar mass of copper to be 63.546 g mol-1.
Hey guys! I was wondering if anyone could explain the difference between calculating molar heat capacity and specific heat capacity?
Thank you!

Molar heat capacity is the heat capacity/number of moles. Specific heat capacity is the heat capacity/mass in grams

Re: C vs Cs/Cm
Molar heat capacity is the energy required to increase 1 mol of a substance by 1 degree (so its heat capacity divided by mols) and specific heat capacity is the energy required to increase 1 gram of a substance by 1 degree (so its heat capacity divided by grams

Molar heat capacity refers to the number of moles, and specific heat capacity refers to the mass in grams!

Re: C vs Cs/Cm
If it asks for Cm then it's asking for molar heat capacity which is the amount of heat needed to raise the temp by 1 degree per mol, while Cs, specific heat capacity is asking for the amount of heat to raise the temp by 1 degree per gram.

The molar heat capacity (Cm) is the energy required to raise the temp of one mole of some substance by one degree. Specific heat capacity (Cs) is the same thing but for one gram of some substance

The molar heat capacity involves the number of moles, but the specific heat capacity refers to the mass (grams).

Hi! Molar heat capacity involves the number of moles whereas specific heat capacity involves the mass in grams.

Hi! Molar heat capacity is measuring the number of moles, while specific heat capacity is measuring the mass in grams
