Constant Pressure vs Constant Volume Calorimeter

Postby Mariko Hashimoto 2I » Mon Jan 24, 2022 4:02 pm

Can a constant volume calorimeter be used to calculate enthalpy? If so, is it any different than calculations with a constant pressure calorimeter?

Enthalpy is defined to be the change of energy under constant pressure. Thus, a constant volume calorimeter can't be used to measure enthalpy.

If a constant volume calorimeter cannot be used to calculate enthalpy values, what information can it give us?

A constant-volume calorimeter has a fixed volume (only pressure changes). It can be used to measure qv.

Constant volume calorimeter is used to calculate qv while a constant-pressure calorimeter is used to calculate qp(or the enthalpy of a reaction)

A constant pressure calorimeter can be used to calculate enthalpy, but not a constant volume calorimeter as it is used to calculate qv.

Since this calorimeter has a fixed volume it measures the internal change of energy for a combustion reaction.

Enthalpy is the change in energy of a system under a constant pressure. A constant volume calorimeter cannot be used to calculate enthalpy. A constant volume calorimeter can only help us to find the value of Qv.

With a constant-volume calorimeter only pressure changes so it has a fixed volume. This can be now used to measure qv.
