Calculating q

Postby Amy Shimizu 1J » Fri Jan 28, 2022 1:32 pm

Hi, I was a bit confused on textbook problem 4D.3 because to calculate q of the calorimeter, the equation they used was q = C*deltaT instead of q = mc*deltaT. When do we know to use or not use mass when calculating q?

Rewatch my lecture where I discussed that heat capacity can be useful when discussing the heat capacity of a calorimeter:

It is the heat capacity for the calorimeter (and therefore does not make sense to talk about per gram or per mole).

My lecture has something similar to the above wording and discussion.

I discussed it when going through the three different heat capacities:

heat capacity
molar heat capacity
specific heat capacity
