Open vs. Closed Systems

Postby Amy Shimizu 1J » Fri Jan 28, 2022 1:36 pm

Today in lecture, an example was brought up where it was mentioned that though physically, a system can be open, we treat it as one in which we cannot add or remove mass from it which makes it, in a sense, a closed system. Does this mean that in this class, we won't necessarily deal with physically open systems?

Correct, we will rarely have systems that will exchange physical matter with the surroundings.

Such systems don't usually reach equilibrium.

We will keep in simple.
No "physical stuff" going in or out of systems.
