Extensive Properties
What is an extensive property? What makes heat capacity an extensive property and what other examples are there?

Re: Extensive Properties
An extensive property depends on the amount of matter in a sample. ex: density

Re: Extensive Properties
Extensive property means that it is dependent on the amount of something. Heat capacity is extensive because it is dependent on the amount of substance that is being heated. It will take more heat to raise the temperature of 10 g of H2O than it will to raise the temperature of 1 g.

Re: Extensive Properties
An extensive property is something that depends on the size of the substance, not just the kind of substance that it is referring to.

Re: Extensive Properties
This is because it depends on the amount of substance being heated. It is not a set number.

Re: Extensive Properties
An extensive property is a property that depends on the mass of the substance or the size of the substance. An example of an extensive property is specific heat.

Re: Extensive Properties
Extensive properties are properties that depend on the sample size such as volume and mass. Heat capacity is extensive because the amount of heat depends on the amount of the sample.

Re: Extensive Properties
Extensive property is the variable that depends on the amount of substance. Heat capacity is an extensive property as it's dependent of the amount of substance being heated. Other example is density.

Re: Extensive Properties
Extensive properties depend on the amount of a substance. Therefore, since heat depends on the amount of a substance it is an extensive property. Additionally, heat capacity is heat required to raise the temperature on an object by 1 degree Celsius, making it dependent on a substance.
Re: Extensive Properties
Extensive properties are determined by the amount of a substance ex weight. We did this in 14A for a couple of days but I doubt this information will be relevant to future exams, or at least in terms of studying for them.
