What is work?
Over lectures, we go over that work is not a state property, and go over examples, like compressions. What are other examples of work?

Re: What is work?
To find out how much work has been done on an object, you will have to find the product of force used to move the object/system and the distance the object/system moved. An example could be shaking up a water bottle to make the water particles move faster in the bottle, thus changing the energy of the system. In this example, there would be a very small that would represent the distance that the water particles moved.
Re: What is work?
The simple definition of work is the change in volume against a pressure. One example of work is when gas is expanding on a piston and it moves outwards. Another example is the expanding of a gas upon heating.

Re: What is work?
Just like the answers of other peers, the definition of work is essentially force applied on an object over a certain distance (keep in mind that in the terms of what we are learning now, no change in distance indicates no work is done). This simple definition can then be applied to various different examples, such as the one in class about the work done by a system through expansion of gas or work causing a change in volume due to pressure. Another example of work is simply picking up an object (force applied on an object to counteract gravity, allowing it to move a certain distance).

Re: What is work?
Another example of work is kicking a ball over a certain distance, where the force would be applied from your foot onto the ball.

Re: What is work?
Similar to what others have mentioned, work is simply the amount of force applied over a certain distance. For example, if someone pushes a grocery cart down an aisle at the store, work is being done as there takes force to push the cart a certain distance down the aisle.

Re: What is work?
Likewise, work is how much force is put onto or towards an object! Work requires change, and that change can be in the form of changing the position/displacement, speed, or shape/size of an object.
Re: What is work?
Lifting up an object like a box is work, as we are working against gravity and applying a force over a distance.

Re: What is work?
Work is present only when there is movement. In other words, a Force that acts over a distance. A good example of this is dragging a bike along the road. There is force being applied on the bike over a certain distance. Hence, there is work being done. This isn't limited to tangible things but also the unobserved. Electrons and molecules may also have work done on them.
Re: What is work?
The simple definition of work is force multiplied by distance moved. Another example would be like sawing a log as force is used over a certain distance to cut the log in two.

Re: What is work?
Work is the force on an object over some distance. Pushing an object against gravity or up a hilly road are good examples of work.

Re: What is work?
Work is can be the force multiplied by the distance or a change in volume in relation to pressure.
Re: What is work?
Work is the change in volume against pressure. An example is when a gas expands on a piston and moves it.
