Heat is the transfer of energy between objects where as work is another medium of energy transfer. Heat is more closely associated with entropy because when heat is lost to the surroundings, it cannot be used to do work. All in all, they both act like different forms of energy.

from my understanding work is “mechanical energy” that can be used while heat is thermal energy which can’t.

I think heat is the transfer of energy due to a temperature difference, while work is due to mechanical energy (force acting over a distance).

Heat is the transfer of thermal energy from one substance to another, due to a difference in temperature. Work is the quantity of energy transferred from a system to another, and there has to be force. A system can be anything; it is just an object of interest that you identify yourself. Heat actually transfers between two objects, substances, or mediums. They are really related but are different.

Hi! Heat is the transfer of thermal energy whereas work is basically having to do with mechanical energy. Both are not state properties, but you can "do" work but you can't really "do" heat (that might help in terms of remembering the difference!).

In Physics its generally considered that work is quite literally the force time distance of an object, particle, etc. In Lavelle's lectures he mentioned the piston model many times and likewise the emphasis here is that when the piston is being pushed up, "work" is whats occuring to move it. Heat is more of a scalar in terms of physics and a form of energy that can be transfered from one system to another.

Heat represents a transfer of thermal energy at constant pressure while work represents a transfer of mechanical energy into/out of the system.

Work is achieving motion against an opposing force while heat is energy transferred as a result of temperature difference.
