Textbook Problem 4B 9.

Postby Nailea_Espinal_1K » Tue Feb 07, 2023 9:15 pm

In an adiabatic process, no energy is transferred as heat. Indicate whether each of the following statements about an adiabatic process in a closed system is always true, always false, or true in certain conditions (specify the conditions): (a) delta U=0 (b) q=0 ; (c) q<0; (d) delta U=q; (e) delta U=w.

a) true b) always true c)always false d)true, only if w=0 e) always true

Hello for this question may someone please explain the reasoning for the answers? I was able to get some right, but I want to make sure I understand the reasoning behind the correct answers.

Thank you

Hi! So for this question I used the relation of deltaU = q + w. For A, deltaU would only be 0 if w = 0, since remember q = 0 because no energy is transferred as heat. For B, q = 0 for the same reason. For C, q cannot < 0 because q = 0. For D, deltaU can only equal q if it is equal to 0, which we established in A, can only happen if w = 0. And E would be true because if q = 0, the relation would leave us with deltaU = 0 + w, which is also deltaU = w.
