Homework #8

Postby 206190205 » Sun Dec 03, 2023 10:45 pm

Determine the molecular formula and molecular mass of the compound represented by the chemical structure. Round your answer for the molecular mass to the hundredths place. Lines represent bonds between adjacent atoms.

I was able to get the molecular formula by just counting how much of each atom there was, but is there a specific order of how I'm supposed to write it? or am I supposed to just know that the molecular formula is C6H8O6?

Hello!
Molecular formulas generally follow a specific writing system (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_ ... ill_system) in which carbon is listed first, then hydrogen, then all other elements in alphabetical order (based on their chemical symbols, not the full element name). In this case, since the three elements present are carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, carbon comes first, hydrogen is second, and oxygen is last.
