Determining Strong Acids through Periodic Trends

Postby 705913589 » Mon Dec 04, 2023 11:16 pm

Does electronegativity have a relationship with the strengths of acids? If it does in what way does it affect. Thank you!

Yes, electronegativity does relate to acid strength. In general, the higher the electronegativity of an atom bonded to a hydrogen in an acid, the stronger the acid. This is because a more electronegative atom can better stabilize the negative charge after the hydrogen (as a proton) is released, making it easier for the acid to donate the proton.
