What is the notation for molar mass?

We know that the notation for mass is m, molar quantity is n. What is the notation for molar mass?

Re: What is the notation for molar mass?

Molar Mass is expressed as a capital letter M and should not be confused with molarity. Dr. Lavelle underlines the M for molarity to distinguish the two. The units for molar mass are g/mol. Hope this helped! :)

Re: What is the notation for molar mass?

That's correct. The notation for molar mass is M. However, the notation for molarity is also M, so when a question has M in it, be sure you know which M it's referring to. If the units for it is g/mol, then it's referring to molar mass, whereas if the units are in mol/L, then it's referring to molarity.

Re: What is the notation for molar mass?

The notation for molar mass is a capital M, just remember to pay attention to the units the molar mass unit is (g/mol).

Re: What is the notation for molar mass?

g/mol is mass, mole/liter is Molarity. They both are represented as 'M,' however when im doing my practice or hw problems i just write mass as 'mm.'

Re: What is the notation for molar mass?

If I'm not mistaken, molar mass is expressed as the capital letter M and the units are g/mol which is grams per mole.

Re: What is the notation for molar mass?

Clarifying question, is g/mol the same as g.mol^-1 ?

Re: What is the notation for molar mass?

I am pretty sure that it is just an uppercase M (g/mol).

Re: What is the notation for molar mass?

Yes molar mass is just a capital M which always expressed in the units g/mol. It is the mass of a substance (in grams) divided by its particular amount (in mols).

Re: What is the notation for molar mass?

Yes. To clarify, you are correct. g/mol is equivalent to writing g.mol^-1. The power of negative 1 refers to the fact that the g/mol has moles within the denominator.

Re: What is the notation for molar mass?

in the textbook, it is grams/mol or g*mol^-1
